The Lemon Tree
I’m not sure what inspired the idea, but for Christmas gifts one year I gave Meyer Lemon trees to each of my children and my brother in law. Five years later they are still growing and still producing lemons. I’ve always enjoyed adding lemon to my water and have since found many uses for every part of the lemon. The rind is especially delicious when mixed with pancake batter-hmmm! And of course, my pancakes are always the best during the Lamplighter pancake contest in February, even though the judges panel is always fixed against me!
Did you know that the leaves are aromatic, not toxic, and widely used in cooking? They also, according to an old folklore, promote health and long life! Prince Llewellyn of Glamorgan lived to be 108 years old by drinking lemon leaf tea ever day, so goes the legendary tale.
Though not commonly eaten, lemon leaves are used in a variety of ways: from Christmas wreaths, to floral designs, to potpourri, to Thai cuisine, to wrapping meats, to accent olive oil. Lemon leaves have been used throughout the world since ancient times and even if you live in a colder climate, you can enjoy them throughout the year. You can either grow them entirely inside or move them outside during warmer days. Sepp Holzer, one of my favorite permaculture experts, grows lemon trees 7700 feet above sea level in Switzerland! And Lord willing, Lamplighter will be starting its own permaculture ecosystem this year!
Sorry, I got off topic but I get so excited about growing things the way God intended. Where was I? Yes, purchasing or growing your lemon trees. During the first year you will be enjoying not only the fruit of luscious lemons, but you are in for an amazing fragrant treat when the flowers first open. The fragrance of the flowers is my favorite aromatic scent. And the tree itself adds a beautiful accent to your home and a discussion piece for guests, especially when the flowers are pouring their fragrance into the air. It’s a great opportunity and reminder to share 2 Corinthians 2:13-14: "But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved…”
